Surgeries(root canal treatments, extraction, surgical extraction, wisdom tooth extraction, resection) Bone substitution and sinus lift (bone grafting or bone augmentation)You can read about
Bone substitution at

Root canal treatments (endodontics)The root connects the tooth to the jaw. There is the pulp inside the
root. Root canal treatment removes the pulp of the root and fills it
with an inert material and seals it.
When the pulp is diseased or injured, the pulp tissue dies and has to be removed. A tooth without a pulp is like a tree, which runs dry but still stands and resists external impacts but becomes weaker and weaker.
If you do not remove the pulp in time, your tooth gets infected and this causes intense pain and can lead to a dental abscess.
After the dentist removes the pulp, the root canal is cleaned and sterilised, filled and sealed off to protect it.
After a root canal treatment a
crown,
inlay, or
filling is placed over your tooth to make it stronger, functional and looks like as a natural tooth.
Occasionally a root canal treatment alone will not be enough to remove abscess and relieve pain and the end of the tooth, called the apex (tip or end of the root), and has to be removed by an interaction called resection.
Treatment in steps:
- you will get local anaesthesia at the region of the treatment
- dentist makes an opening through the tooth into the pulp chamber
- determines the length of each canal
- removes the pulp, cleans and shapes the canals
- fills and seals the canals temporary
- tooth built up (see below)
- to complete your tooth restoration you would need a crown or inlay
Our specialised dentiss (endodontist) is Dr Márta Bernáth.
Tooth built up with or without post
After root canal
treatment, if
there is sufficient tooth structure remaining, we will place either a
root canal filling or make a core build-up inside the opening that was
created to perform the root canal treatment.
After root canal treatment, if the tooth lacks sufficient structure to hold the final restoration (i.e.
crown or
inlay), we would place a
post (pin)
inside the tooth during tooth built up. The post can give sufficient
strength for your tooth to hold the final restoration (i.e.
crown or
inlay).
If your
tooth was
broken, e.g. due to an accident, such extent that there is only a small or no visible part left and the tooth root did not damage, than we could save your tooth by built it up by posts (pins) and we would place a crown on it.
ExtractionExtraction is the removal of a tooth from the mouth. Extraction can be simple or surgical extraction.
Simple extractions are performed on teeth that are visible in the mouth and require an instruments to elevate and grasp the visible portion of the tooth.
The most common
reasons for extracting a tooth are:
- tooth decay that has destroyed tooth structure to prevent restoration
- advanced periodontal (gum) disease
- insufficient space for wisdom teeth. See Wisdom tooth extractions
- make space for orthodontic (braces) treatment
- tooth root broken (i.e. broken the tooth under the gum line)
Be aware, if you tooth was broken due to an accident such extent that there is only a small or no visible part left and the tooth root did not damage, than we could
save your
tooth by built it up by posts (pins) and could put a crown on it.
After tooth extraction significant
degeneration of the surrounding
bone may begin. You have many options to
prevent this, and it is important that you consider them.
When your tooth is extracted you can
replace it either by an
implant to
prevent bone losses in your jaw or to make
bone grafting (see details below) right after the extraction.
Our dentists use techniques to protect the supporting bone and gum tissues, which is important to later placement of implants, bridges or dentures for the best possible results.
Treatment in steps:
- oral examination to determine if extraction is really warranted
- evaluate both the internal aspects of the tooth, the tooth root and bone by using a panorama digital x-ray
- it is especially important that you report to our dentist any problems with any previous surgeries, bleeding problems, medical conditions or allergies to medications
- you will get either general anaesthesia (sedation) or local anaesthesia
- tooth extraction
Surgical extractionOur specialised surgeons (oral and maxillofacial surgeon, dento-alveolar surgeon, implantologist) are
Dr Dominik Nagy and
Dr Eszter SzontághYou might need surgical extraction in cases as follows:
- when the dentist can not easily access your tooth for simple extraction
- tooth has not erupted fully
- the tooth has broken under the gum line
- there is a risk that a nerve can damage (e.g. at lower wisdom tooth extraction)
- maxillary sinus exposure at upper jaw (i.e. at upper wisdom and second molar tooth extraction)
Wisdom tooth extractionsOur specialised surgeons (oral and maxillofacial surgeon, dento-alveolar surgeon, implantologist) are
Dr Dominik Nagy and
Dr Eszter SzontághWisdom tooth extraction is usually necessary if you do not have sufficient space left to grow for the wisdom teeth in your mouth. There are four wisdom teeth, one at each of the four ends of the mouth. They are in the last in your teeth growth sequence and that is why may not sufficient space to left in your mouth by other teeth. This causes a number of wisdom tooth problems.
Because of not having sufficient space left to grow, a wisdom tooth can grow sideways or become trapped under the gums. When it partially erupts into the mouth, it can form a packet that traps food. The trapped food can cause tooth decay and the second molar in front of the wisdom tooth may decay. If the gums become infected, it can cause swelling, pain, headache and a bad odour. If the infection is left untreated it can continue around the wisdom tooth and cause facial swelling that can prevent the mouth from opening.
The pressure from a wisdom tooth trying to get space into the mouth can cause the rest of the teeth to move out of place. Early wisdom tooth surgery may even avoid the need for orthodontic treatment. When a wisdom tooth is badly trapped inside the jawbone, a cyst may form around the wisdom tooth.
A wisdom tooth problem can interfere with your life. Pilots and submariners often have all their wisdom teeth removed to avoid any potential problems that may interfere with their duties. If you travel or have a very busy period, an infected wisdom tooth can disrupt your time.
When a wisdom tooth symptom occurs as described above, it is important to have your wisdom tooth removed.
We always remove
wisdom tooth by
surgical extraction in order to avid the possible complication like
nerve injury at the lower jaw or
maxillary sinus exposure at upper jaw. Our
specialised surgeon will remove your wisdom teeth.
ResectionOur specialised dentists (endodontist) are
Dr Márta Bernáth and
Dr Petra Papp.
Occasionally a root canal treatment alone will not be enough to
remove abscess and relieve pain at the end of the tooth, called the apex (tip or end of the root). In such case the apex has to be removed by entering through the gum and surgically removing the diseased material.
If you were anxious, we could complete all surgeries and treatments under
general anaesthesia.
