Gum dieses, periodonticsGum dieses (periodontics) treats periodontitis, an
inflammation of tissues that surrounds and supports the teeth or implants in the mouth.
Periodontitis is a very common disease affecting approximately 50% of adults over the age of 30 years. If periodontitis is left untreated it may lead to tooth loss in around 35% cases.
Patients should realize that the gingival inflammation and bone destruction are largely painless. Hence, people may wrongly assume that painless bleeding after teeth cleaning is insignificant, although this may be a symptom of progressing periodontitis.
Symptoms may include the following:
- occasional redness or bleeding of gums while brushing teeth, using dental floss or biting into hard food (e.g. apples)
- occasional gum swellings that recur
- halitosis, or bad breath, and a persistent metallic taste in the mouth
- gingival recession, resulting in apparent lengthening of teeth
- deep pockets between the teeth and the gums
- loose teeth, in the later stages
Prevention:- brushing properly on a regular basis (at least twice a day)
- flossing daily
- regular dental check-ups. See Diagnosis
- professional teeth cleaning as required. See Dental hygienic treatment
