Crown

When you do not have sufficient tooth structure left to place a composite filling or an inlay than crowns can solve your problem.

A crown is a cap placed over a carefully prepared natural or implanted tooth. The shade of porcelain match your surrounding teeth, making the crown appear as natural as your existing teeth.

Once the crown is permanently cemented, your chewing ability is like that of your natural teeth and you may again enjoy your natural appearance.

We can restore your damaged, broken, short teeth with crowns.

If your teeth are slightly crowded or misaligned, probably we can solve this with dental crowns. Send us a digital photos for preliminary assessment.

If your tooth was broken, e.g. due to an accident, such extent that there is only a small or no visible part left and the tooth root did not damage, than we could save your tooth by built it up by posts (pins) and we would place a crown on it.

We always make SHOULDER CROWN PREPARATION, which ensures the most aesthetic and long-lasting results. Shoulder crown preparation is the most sophisticated method nowadays and require much higher precision than traditional (tangential) crown preparation technique what still lot of dentistry do.

What is shoulder preparation?

The dentist prepares shoulder around your natural tooth at your gum line level. Your new crown and your natural teeth will perfectly suit each other at the shoulder. This require much more precise work than traditional tangential preparation because the line, where your new crown and your natural teeth joint, must remain no visible (no recognizable) at your gum line.

At traditional tangential crown preparation the crown will suit to the natural teeth below the gum line and shoulder is not prepared. Because it is below the gum line and it is not visible there, less precise work is required from a dentist. Bacteria can accumulate below the gum line and this can cause gum infection and fosters gum shrinkage (recession). As the gum shrinks the line where the crown and natural tooth meet become visible and not aesthetic.

Comparisons of shouldered and traditional tangential preparations:

Shouldered crown preparation:
  • gum and periodontium are protected
  • no gum inflammation, gum recession
  • no crown margin standing out
  • grey gum margin does not develop
  • precise preparation technique
  • made under a microscope
  • decay next to the crown margin rare

Traditional tangential crown preparation:
  • gum and periodontium are not protected
  • gum inflammation, gum recession are frequent
  • the margin of the crown stands out under the gum
  • grey gum margin might develop
  • imprecise preparation technique
  • the dental technician makes it without microscope
  • decay next to the crown margin frequent

A crown can be either zirconium oxide, porcelain, porcelain fused to metal or gold.

Zirconium oxide crown

You and your friends will be amazed at the results with your zirconium oxide crowns. Next to your natural teeth, it is almost impossible to differentiate which are your natural or zirconium oxide teeth.

Zirconium oxide crown is excellent choice especially for your front teeth, where the perfect aesthetic and biting resistance, and for your rear teeth, where the grinding resistance are important.

A zircon crown is slightly transparent as a natural tooth. A zircon crown looks the most natural among other solutions, because it does not contain metal, slightly transparent and its colour can be set up to perfectly mach your natural teeth.

Zirconium oxide crowns are widely used in the modern dentistry and the material and technology has been proved with long experience. It is a perfect choice if you like the most natural looking and long term durable solution.

Advantages of zirconium oxide crowns are as follows:
  • aesthetic, almost impossible to differentiate which are natural and zirconium oxide teeth
  • strong and withstand the high forces of biting and grinding
  • light weight
  • does not contain metal
  • slightly transparent as a natural tooth
  • biocompatible

Pros for zirconium oxide crowns:
  • zirconium oxide crowns looks nicer than porcelain fused to metal, its colour can be set up more precisely to your existing teeth
  • it is a little bit transparent as natural teeth. It is almost impossible to differentiate which teeth have crown and which is natural.
  • it is more convenient because it has lighter weight
  • biocompatible and do not contain metal.
  • the porcelain fused to metal crowns, the metal may decolour the gum because it may accumulate in the tissues of the gum

Cons for zirconium oxide crowns:
  • zirconium oxide has been invented in dentistry in the past decade and the time has not been elapsed to prove the same or longer guarantee, than porcelain fused to metal
  • more expensive than porcelain fused to metal

Crown porcelain fused to metal or gold

A crown is composed of either Porcelain fused to metal or Porcelain fused to gold. The metal or gold forms the interior and the basis for exterior porcelain. The metal or gold creates the strength that functions like your natural teeth and the exterior porcelain ensures that your crown perfectly matches your existing teeth. Gold lasts longer than metal.

Pros for metal based crowns:
  • have been in use in many decades so there is very long experience with them
  • cheaper than zirconium oxide
  • it does not brake as zirconium oxide may brake for hard biting but if it cracked and the porcelain would peel off and the metal become visible.

Cons for metal based crowns:
  • it contains metals. The metal may recolor the gum because it can accumulate in the soft tissues of the gum.
  • it colour is not as natural as zirconium oxide, and experienced eyes can recognize that it is not a natural tooth

Treatment in steps
